ABOUT CLASSICAL GUITAR STRINGS

Making classical guitar strings is an art. Luckily, the D’Addario family are artists—artist who’ve been meticulously honing their craft for generations. In the distant past, we made gut strings by hand in Italy. Nowadays, we’ve implemented modern technology to elevate and perfect the process at home in the USA.

A big part of making classical guitar strings is our polymer extrusion process. D’Addario’s polymer extrusion line produces strings with exceptional accuracy. Two-axis laser micrometers continuously monitor the polymer extrusion process, ensuring precise control of string diameter and concentricity, which leads to accurate tension and intonation for every string.

Are All Classical Strings Nylon?

Our classical guitar strings are made with different core and wrap materials, though nylon is the most common core/treble string material for classical guitar sets. Nylon provides a warmth and tonal character that is familiar to classical guitar. However, it is not the only material that is used for treble strings. Fluorocarbon is a similar synthetic material which is also used to make classical guitar strings but provides a brighter tone than nylon. Aside from that, there are differing types of nylon, like composite core, for instance.

What Type of String is Best for Classical Guitar?

Like with any artistic pursuit, it’s important that you choose what sounds, feels, and works best for you. So, the best classical guitar strings are the ones that you prefer. If you want the “standard” classical string set, we’d suggest Pro-Arté Nylon. This classical set features precisely intonating trebles, paired with wound basses, to deliver a warm, yet projecting tone. You can also opt for a longer-lasting string with our XT Classical sets, which are coated to extend the string life.
